Week 4
Assignment 1
Assignment 1
- Download the Unit C Advanced Lab Techniques Powerpoint file
- Complete your coursepack section for this unit and place it in your notebook. You may print the cousepack here:

Assignment 2
- Type a project proposal for your semester Agriscience Project. You must develop your own project, however you may decide to dovetail your project with a partner. In other words, you may share the same resources as much as possible but have different controls and test for different variables.
- Make sure your proposal is typed, double spaced and is one page minimum.
- Purchase a lab notebook that is spiral bound (the pages are not able to be removed and re-attached). You will use this to keep a record of all actions taken with your research project. Pay particular attention to the Lab Notebook section of the Unit C Powerpoint. You should follow the same rules stated in the Powerpoint for your lab notebook as mentioned in the Powerpoint. Go ahead and start with a title and headers section of your notebook and then compete the purpose section. You should include the time and date each entry is made. Make sure you do not remove any portion of the lab notebook. If you need to make changes or correction mark our the error or change and then write in the change or correction.
- Present a news report on two important issues in Bioethics. The assignment sheet is attached below.
- Be prepared to present your news report on Friday, September 28. You may use the members of the other group to enhance your news story, but the story should be researched, written, and produced by the assigned members of your group.
- Group members for this project are as follows:

Week 5
Assignment 1
Assignment 1
- Begin thinking about your project's purpose statement. Remember, the purpose statement is sometimes stated as the "problem" but for our efforts we are going to call it the "Purpose."
- Type your projects purpose statement after writing a rough draft in your lab notebook. Remember this statement should not be longer than one page. It will also be the purpose statement that you post on your display.
- Print this purpose statement and give it to another student to provide feedback. Ask them to make any corrections or suggestions and mark that on your paper. Have them sign their name at the bottom.
- Correct your purpose statement and staple the rough draft that your partner corrected to the back. Submit both copies for grading. You will get credit for your purpose statement as well as the feedback you give each other. Make sure you do a good job making suggestions for your classmates.
- Download both the Powerpoint for Unit D and the Unit D Coursepack. Place the coursepack in your notebook and complete the missing sections using the Powerpoint.

Assignment 3
- You have submitted your project proposals earlier in the semester. It is now time to begin collecting research on your topic and writing a review of research. A review of research is similar to a review of literature you remember from English class. It is basically a compilation of work that has been done previously and any other information on components of your research.
- The main goal this week is to compile as much information as possible in this review. It may include information pertaining to to basic elements of your project and/or other research that has been done in this area. You will construct this in the form of a research paper including a source page at the end. I prefer APA format for this assignment but will allow MLA. We will not set a concrete length to this assignment, however approximately 5 pages is appropriate.
- When you collect your information do not use notecards. Instead of notecards like you were taught in Junior English, I want you to use your lab notebook. I suggest that you include information for one source per page. Place the source title at the top and your information on the space below.
- You should use at least five sources in this attempt and more if needed.
Weeks 6
Assignment 1
Assignment 1
- Write a one page editorial for your local newspaper explaining your opinion to an issue pertaining to Genetic Manipulation of Organisms.
- You will need to explain your position in terms that can be understood by the average reader since most people do not know what transgenic or GMO means.
- Present this editorial to the class before submitting to the class work box. You teacher will give you an opportunity to do this before the end of the week.
- Some topics you may want to consider (you are not limited to just these areas):
- The safety of GMO Foods
- rDNA in seed development
- Monsanto and other companies use of proprietorship in product development
- Government agencies and their monitoring in Biotechnology
- Obtain the study guide handout on Unit D. Complete the questions and use to help prepare you for your test this week on Unit D.
- Prepare a hypothesis statement for your research project. This will be the statement that you use to post on your project display board.
- Make sure you do a rough draft of your hypothesis in your lab notebook before you begin typing.
- Construct this hypothesis in the format that you plan to use on your display.
- Continue working on your research project as you have time. This will be the major focus of this course.
Research Project
October 23-November 8
You will have some time to work on your research project the last few weeks of class. Remember your research project is a large majority of your grade during this semester and you should be working on it each day.
This assignment will be due one week before the final exam is given. Remember, you must have the three components of this project completed at this time. Those components are the display backboard, research paper, and the lab notebook.
In addition to the information above you also need to complete one other task this week. Please download a copy of the the Agriscienec Student of the the Year Application from the National FFA Website and complete the application. This must be completed by the end of this week.
You may find a direct link to the application at this website:

November 11-27
Remember to continue you work on your research project. As we have discussed in class, do not wait until the last second to complet6e the project. You have been given a rubric for grading earlier in the semester and you shoud review that document again as you contine your project.
In addition, this week you will need to downlaod the Powerpoint document on Unit E, Plants in Biotechnology. Review the information within the powerpoint for understanding. You may print this presentation if needed.

The Biotechology 1 students will be learning a little bit about applied genetics later in the semester. I would like for you to work in groups to create a presentation explaining the science behind plants in biotechnology. You may choose which group you work with. Group 1 you will be researching Bt crops. Group 2 you will be researching Round-up Ready crops. You should create a Powerpoint presentation that explains the purpose behind the crops, the science of how they are created, and the impact that it has on the agriculture industry. You might want to also include any drawbacks or dangers of the crop that you are researching.
You will need to be prepared to present by next Monday, November 25.

December 5-9
As you continue to work on your projects make sure that you are recording any data that you take in a notebook that can be used for evidence along with your report and display.
You will also be completing a worksheet on Unit F, Animals in Biotechnology. You may use the powerpoint and internet to find the answers to the worksheet. Once you have completed the worksheet you may download and answer the Elements Questions on Unit F. We will go over the correct answers to these questions on Thursday. Your test on this unit will be Friday.

Final Weeks
In these final weeks of the semester you will have quite a bit of class time to finalize your agriscience projects. Some of you will require more time to finish your project than others. You will also need to complete the final packets of VoCATs questions for the course. Units G and H will be combined into one test and Units I and J will be combined into the final test for the nine weeks. The powerpoint presentations for those units are listed below.
